Having after school programs, particularly for students with learning and attention issues, can be crucial to the learning process. According to Understood, a non profit for learning and attention issues, after school programs can help create a sense of belonging, improve social skills, provide academic support, make learning more fun, provide safety and supervision, and build confidence (Kelly). They provide a different space outside of school that may seem less intimidating and foster a better environment for learning.
Students who are able to attend after school programs further their education after school is out. Students who don’t have those opportunities get left behind and don’t have the structure, learning, and relationships of the programs. It’s important to have after school programs that aren’t just privately owned activities and club sports. Every student deserves a safe space to go and continue their education after school, regardless of socioeconomic background.
